Why do bodybuilders consume skyr?

The skyr is a fresh cheese that has been very popular in recent years, especially among bodybuilders and people who are careful about what they eat. Do you know why? We are going to talk about it.

What exactly is a skyr?

This yogurt, made from fermented milk (not curdled), comes to us from Norway, and it is said that it was the Vikings who first included it in their diet, bringing the skyr back to Iceland.

Its texture is slightly more compact than fromage frais. It is made from semi-skimmed milk to which lactic acid bacteria have been added. It is then wrung out to remove the juice and make it thicker. Last but not least, it's packed with essential amino acids.

Where can I find it?

It is generally in the fresh section of supermarkets. It is available under several brands and can be flavored with vanilla, blueberries or others. Nevertheless, sportsmen do not choose this last option to stick to their nutrition.

Skyr

Why is it so coveted by athletes?

When we are practicing bodybuilding, we look for our calories and macros to be respected and in adequacy with our objectives. And, we athletes, look for foods rich in protein as a priority. If you want to know more about protein, I invite you to read this article : WHAT IS THE ROLE OF PROTEIN IN BODYBUILDING?

If you generally turn to lean meat, eggs and fish (or even dietary supplements) to maintain your muscles, we have quickly done the trick. The skyr can therefore be the solution to vary your meals even more by becoming a dessert or a perfect snack for your diet.

In fact, the nutritional values of skyr remain very interesting for the muscle and in order to always maintain the muscle mass acquired for some time, athletes need it. Here are the other advantages it has:

  • Rich in proteins as already mentioned above
  • Low in fat
  • Rich in calcium
  • Low calorie
  • gives an immediate feeling of satiety

By studying this table above the nutritional values of different food choices, we can notice that the small Swiss is as rich in proteins as the skyr. Unfortunately, it is also the most caloric since it contains a lot of fat too.

We also notice that skyr and cottage cheese are quite similar. If you can't find skyr on the shelves, don't panic, you can replace it with 0 % cottage cheese or petit suisse (also 0%) without worrying. Besides, the latter are a bit cheaper.

How to consume it?

Perfect to incorporate into your nutrition, you can choose to consume skyr as a breakfast or snack if you wish.

Here are some ideas:

Acaï bowl : Pour your skyr (3 tablespoons) in your blender with some strawberries, 3 fresh mint leaves and half a spoon of honey. Place the mixture in your bowl and add 1 of your oatmeal. This is a very good snack.

You can make the same preparation but instead of eating it with your flakes, you can eat it alone as a yogurt with some cashews or almonds and stevia.

Last idea, when you make a yogurt cake think about using skyr instead.

Is skyr really good for your health?

Some people who are lactose intolerant will not be able to consume skyr for the same reason that they will not consume milks or other foods such as certain cheeses.

Other people also argue that dairy products are dangerous for your health. And even more so when we work out. Is this true?

Despite some studies that prove that it is necessary to consume dairy products and other studies that give the opposite, we are not able to say that they are good or bad for your health. They are a good source of protein, give you the humanitarian support you need and prevent certain cancers.

Nevertheless, they are also responsible for the acid-base imbalance (which in the long term would harm our bones). It would therefore be wise to say to ourselves that when we are children, we need it but when we become adults, consuming it in moderation would be wiser.

You should know that I have always eaten it. Just like cottage cheese 0 %.

Now that you know everything about the skyr, you should know that you can integrate it as much in a mass gain diet as in a weight loss diet (dry) as long as you always count your calories and macros.

As you can see, training is not everything. The foods you choose to eat are very important and even more so for weight training. Choose them carefully and your health will be better if your digestion allows it.

  1. I love skyr and it's true that it has been a success for not so long. I take it plain or flavored (even if it's a little less interesting).
As I'm a vegetarian it's handy to get a good dose of protein.
